[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Breaking News are happening now!
[00:00:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Hi everybody and welcome to the Reality Flash. My name is Mike Bloom and I'm here to bring you the flashiest breaking news in the wild world of reality TV.
[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, the calendar page has officially turned and we have entered 2025. Of course, a happy new year to you and yours.
[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, the end of a year and the beginning of another is kind of like a weird space to be in as you are spending equal parts looking back on what's happened while also looking forward at what hopefully will happen.
[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: So I thought for the inaugural episode of this new podcast, The Reality Flash, I'd get into some of the biggest things that we got to experience in 2024 in reality TV.
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: And what I'm most excited is coming down the pike in the next 12 months.
[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_00]: So across the board, 2024 saw a number of reality stars who began, I would say like a second act of their career.
[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Take for example, Phaedra Parks.
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_00]: So in 2017, Phaedra had been fired from the Real Housewives of Atlanta and she had been attempting a comeback in the 2020s with shows like Ultimate Girls Trip and Married to Medicine.
[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_00]: But the Mortician truly resurrected her time in the spotlight when she took that transatlantic flight over to that famous castle in Scotland and turned out a star turn on season two of The Traitors.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, by the end of that season, we are all saying, Lord, yes, more Phaedra Parks.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_00]: So Phaedra appeared this past fall in Dancing with the Stars, kind of riding that momentum from what happened at the very beginning of the year.
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And to really put a point on how much of a year of rebirth this has been for her, it has been announced that Phaedra will actually be returning to the Real Housewives of Atlanta for its upcoming season in 2025.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: A full eight years after she had just been fired from the exact same series.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Take as another example, the very person that Phaedra had called in an ice princess in The Traitors Turrent.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about Parvati Shallow.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_00]: So the Survivor legend is an incredibly different person from who we saw last time.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Last time she graced our screens in 2020 in Survivor Winners at War.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: She had ended her marriage in 2021.
[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_00]: She had come out as queer at the end of 2023 on social media.
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_00]: But 2024 saw Parvati's return to TV and she both made new fans and delighted her past.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: And it seems like her re-emergence is here to stay.
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: We won't have to squint hard to see her on another reality show.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: But talk more about that in a little bit.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about somebody else.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Big second act.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Big re-emergence in 2024.
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Ariana Maddox.
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Another great instance of this type of arc.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Ariana was somebody who was coming out of one of the most emotionally fragile years she has ever had in front of the camera.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_00]: On the heels of, in the wake of, this massive Scandaval series of events that occupied the space of 2023.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_00]: But over the course of the past year, she was really able to turn tragedy into triumph.
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: She made her Broadway debut in Chicago.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_00]: She became the host of Love Island over the course of the summer.
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_00]: So she has really been able to make a fantastic transition out of Vanderpump rules.
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And not a moment too soon.
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about Vanderpump, actually.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Because we really ended up seeing the end of an era for VPR in 2024.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: So while the hit Bravo series did air an 11th season last year and, you know, kind of filled in this awkward transitional period post-Scandaval,
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: the way it ended brought a lot of questions from fans as to how it was going to continue, if at all.
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And so the answer was with a completely new cast.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: We are almost like wiping the slate clean.
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_00]: It's the first reboot in the show's history.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see what VPR, the new class, will provide and how it could stack up to everything the series has brought over a decade.
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Including an increasingly stacked number of controversies among its group.
[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_00]: And on the note of men behaving badly, 2024 showed that when it comes to the Bachelor universe, every rose has its thorn.
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So Jen Tran's season of The Bachelorette had probably one of its most controversial endings in recent memory,
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: when the winner of that season, Devin Strader, was discovered to have an alleged arrest and restraining order from a previous relationship.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And so just when we thought we were out of the water, when we approached the more mature men of The Golden Bachelorette,
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: we found out that age is truly just a number because one of the men vying for Joan Vassos' heart was a man named Gil Ramirez,
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_00]: who some internet sleuthing was able to discover that he apparently had a history of stalking,
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_00]: as well as also having a restraining order out against him.
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_00]: The men apparently do not tell all when it comes to their criminal records.
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: But despite those little moments, I largely remember 2024 with the highs of some of the most veteran reality series we have out there still running today.
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, Survivor continued on its big hot streak, producing two wildly different yet entertaining seasons in 46 and 47
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_00]: that had many fans calling it the best the new era has had to offer so far.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, Big Brother 26 was an absolutely wild ride from beginning to end, full of arguments, power shifts, and record-breaking chaos.
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Dancing with the Stars set record numbers in its voting, 33 seasons in, and earned tens across the boards for especially crossing over into the social media world.
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_00]: And despite Love Island US now being on its sixth season, it really hit its stride this year.
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_00]: It yielded so many fantastic moments, of course plenty of romance, and even a freaking Cheez-Its brand deal.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: It's safe to say, much like Cordell Beckham's favorite snack, we were well-fed when it came to reality TV in 2024.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: And now, it is time to look ahead.
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll be back in a flash to tell you what I am most excited about when it comes to reality TV in 2025.
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So now that we've talked about what's behind us, it is time for us to avert our gaze to what's to come in 2025 in the world of reality TV.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And we start with something that's a little over a week away.
[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, I'm talking about The Traitors Season 3.
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: So, since the American version has gone full celebrity, it really has caught fire like a torch lit with the oil of betrayal,
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_00]: becoming one of the most talked about shows of last year.
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_00]: And this year's group features, of course, some more big names from the world of Survivor, Big Brother, the Bravoverse, and beyond.
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_00]: All playing, of course, in the sandbox of this high-stakes, wildly entertaining game of what's basically Mafia.
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Just think about Tony Blachos and Bob the Drag Queen having a conversation about, like, anything, really.
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Or Dorinda Medley and Brittany Haynes exchanging messy barbs at one another.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Or watching two of the greatest strategists in the history of the genre in Boston Rob Mariano and Daniel Reyes going tip-top toes.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Or even just, like, the absolute wildcard, out-of-nowhere nature of casting Zac Efron's brother and Brittany Spears' ex-husband.
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Almost like they kind of, like, bumped into the person doing the claim-to-fame casting and got a couple of their files mixed up.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Either way, between the sure-to-be-guaranteed dramatic arguments to come and the always fantastic hosting and outfits from Alan Cumming,
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_00]: much like a roundtable, we are sure to be seated for Season 3.
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_00]: We're also going to be seeing Deal or No Deal Island making its way to NBC for Season 2,
[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_00]: and that will also feature three reality TV alumni in the aforementioned Parvati,
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Big Brother legend Dr. Will Kirby, and Australian Survivor winner David Jennett.
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And for those who are worried that previous victors like Tony and Parvati have left that island life far behind them,
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_00]: drop your expectations.
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Because, also coming in 2025, Australian Survivor colon Australia versus the world.
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_00]: So, to commemorate ten seasons of the reboot of the Down Under edition of Survivor,
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_00]: including the upcoming Brains vs. Brawn 2 installment, which should be happening in the next couple months,
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_00]: we are going to get a theme that fans have been dying to see come to fruition.
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_00]: They're taking legends from the Australian version of the game,
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_00]: and highlights luminaries from New Zealand, Quebec, Norway, South Africa, and, of course, the United States.
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, last year, some of the casting has already been announced, like Titans vs. Rebels standout Kirby,
[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_00]: the villainous King George, we have Shawnee making a record-breaking fourth appearance on Australian Survivor,
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_00]: but the vs. the world part has honestly come out swinging.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_00]: They announced three American players so far, and they are big ones.
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Parvati, Tony, and, of course, Saree Fields.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_00]: These are three individuals who, at least I thought, and a lot of fans did,
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_00]: had ostensibly kind of, like, moved on from Survivor, had done other shows,
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_00]: felt like they had traded in the beachside shelter for the Trader's Mansion in the case of all three of them.
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_00]: But even though we're already a year removed from the Olympics,
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_00]: we still kind of get this element of getting to have them represent the U.S.
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: on this world stage in a very different type of event.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_00]: And, of course, I'd be remiss not to mention the fact that Survivor U.S.
[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_00]: will be celebrating a monumental anniversary.
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_00]: It's 25th anniversary this coming May,
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_00]: and, in honor of the occasion, we'll be filming its highly anticipated 50th season.
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_00]: And as someone who spent 50 podcasts in 2024
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_00]: for talking about the mere possibility of people being on Season 50,
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I personally am so excited to keep inching closer
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_00]: until the actual occasion where we get to see
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_00]: some of these people that we've talked about on our screens
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_00]: for this anniversary season.
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk talent, shall we?
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_00]: And, of course, we know America's got it,
[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_00]: but I'm actually most looking forward to the upcoming season
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_00]: of American Idol this spring.
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's because Katy Perry out as a judge,
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and we are bringing in, for the first time,
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_00]: not only an Idol alum, but a winner onto the panel.
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, I am talking about Carrie Underwood.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_00]: She is joining Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan,
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_00]: and she is sitting down in the same chairs,
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_00]: sipping that Coca-Cola that she faced a decade ago
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_00]: after she had won in Season 4
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_00]: and became arguably one of the most successful winners
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_00]: and contestants in terms of a post-show career in Idol history.
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_00]: For years, I have been jockeying for these talent shows
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_00]: to bring on alumni as judges,
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_00]: considering this interesting element of how much wisdom
[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_00]: they can impart onto other contestants
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_00]: based on their own personal experience.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_00]: We just saw Top Chef do it with Kristen Kish,
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_00]: and I feel like it went over absolutely swimmingly.
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_00]: It's, of course, been a staple of Canada's Drag Race
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_00]: with Brooklyn Heights.
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_00]: When it comes to giving critiques,
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I am more than happy to say,
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Carrie, take the wheel.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully her appearance on the show
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_00]: will be inside your heaven.
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Can we actually talk for a second?
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember when American Idol wrote an original song
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_00]: every finale that they made both finalists perform?
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_00]: It's sort of like a B-side release that ends up coming out
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_00]: once the winner is announced.
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_00]: It's just odd to think about the alternate universe
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_00]: where Justin Guarini is singing a moment like this,
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_00]: or like Catherine McPhee, now Foster,
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_00]: is belting out Do I Make You Proud?
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_00]: So forgive me for waxing nostalgic,
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_00]: but if you actually look at some of the new reality TV
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_00]: coming to our screens this next month,
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_00]: you'll realize it's actually not so new
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_00]: in terms of concept.
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So the 2000s were a veritable wild west
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_00]: when it came to the genre,
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_00]: as the explosion of the just general concept
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_00]: of unscripted TV onto the scene
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_00]: meant there was no idea too small or insane
[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_00]: to be produced.
[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_00]: But truly, everything old is new again,
[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_00]: with the return of two veteran shows
[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_00]: from the turn of the century here in January.
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So tomorrow, January 2nd on ABC,
[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_00]: sees the return of Extreme Makeover Home Edition.
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And after everyone moves that bus,
[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_00]: you could actually see there is a familiar face
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_00]: to the world of reality TV,
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_00]: having made their transition as a part of the design crew.
[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_00]: So Survivor winner Wendell Holland
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_00]: was not able to prove that he was the GOAT last year,
[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_00]: but he may be at construction.
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_00]: He's going to bring his literal craftiness
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_00]: off the island and make some family's dreams come true.
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of the GOAT, actually,
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_00]: that is the name, interestingly enough,
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_00]: of the fake reality show
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_00]: at the center of the Joe Schmo Show,
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_00]: which is coming back for season four
[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_00]: on January 21st over on TBS.
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So this series, if you don't know it,
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_00]: is a complete send-up of the genre of reality TV,
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_00]: as one person is essentially at the center
[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_00]: of this, like, giant hoax.
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_00]: It's like a real-life Truman show.
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_00]: They have no idea that everything around them,
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_00]: from the contestants to the host to the production,
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_00]: from beginning to end,
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_00]: is completely scripted.
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_00]: It is going to be so interesting to see,
[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, over 20 years after the show first debuted,
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_00]: to see what series and tropes and big twists
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: that Joe Schmo will bring upon its return,
[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_00]: considering how much more reality TV there is nowadays
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_00]: and how much things have really reshaped itself
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_00]: from decades ago.
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: And also on the other side,
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_00]: especially in the wake of a recent show like Jury Duty,
[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I am really intrigued to see
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: whether the titular Schmo can actually,
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_00]: at one point, see through the ruse in front of them.
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Regardless, if I have not made it clear,
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_00]: there's plenty of exciting reality TV
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_00]: to look forward to in 2025,
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_00]: whether it be new casts
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: or old shows with a fresh cone of paint.
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And with the new year comes plenty of news
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_00]: on the horizon,
[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and I cannot wait to bring you
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_00]: everything you need to know
[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_00]: whenever it breaks.
[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_00]: So that being said,
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_00]: if you see something,
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_00]: say something.
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you have any reality TV news
[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_00]: that just happens upon your feed
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_00]: that you want me to cover here on The Reality Flash,
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_00]: no spam,
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_00]: no solicitations,
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_00]: just tips.
[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_00]: That's just tips
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_00]: at realityflash.com.
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Again,
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_00]: just tips
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_00]: at realityflash.com
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_00]: because
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_00]: sometimes the only thing
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_00]: that can change a bad day
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_00]: to a good one
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_00]: is just a tip.
[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And be sure to subscribe,
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_00]: of course,
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_00]: at therealityflash.com
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_00]: to make sure you do not miss a second.
[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Every time a piece of breaking news comes in
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_00]: that we feel like we want to talk about
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_00]: to share with you all,
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_00]: we will drop a podcast
[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_00]: in the feeds,
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_00]: we'll drop a YouTube video
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00]: here in the visual aspect
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_00]: as well.
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So do not starve your eyes
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_00]: and ears.
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Make sure you're subscribed,
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_00]: therealityflash.com.
[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_00]: That's going to do it
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_00]: for the very first episode
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_00]: of The Reality Flash.
[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I am brimming right now
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_00]: with excitement,
[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_00]: not only with all the stuff
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I highlighted,
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_00]: but all the possibility
[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_00]: of new stuff
[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_00]: to pop into our minds
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_00]: that we can't even think of
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_00]: and just the idea
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_00]: of getting to do this
